"Number Two, 1968" from the second edition of Eye by Sewell Sillman. Sillman (1924-1992) studied under Josef Albers beginning in 1948 at the Black Mountain School and continued under Albers at Yale, where he was an assistant and then teacher until 1966. In 1962 he formed the art publishing firm Ives-Sillman with Norman Ives, producing art prints for Albers, Lichtenstein, De Kooning and others. While his oil paintings consist of bold geometric compositions, his line drawings explore the possibilities of soft organic forms--delicate and enigmatic.
