Richard Müller (1874-1954) was a German artist born in the Bohemian city of Tschirnitz (now part of the Czech Republic). He is famous as a master of the etching form and infamous for having condoned the dismissal of Otto Dix while Müller was president of the Dresden Academy. Müller himself only lasted two years before being ousted for the "degeneracy" of his work. His style was symbolist and surrealist, often mixing erotic and grotesque imagery, while borrowing classical motifs. This etching, one of a run of 90, depicts a pilgrim covered in mice.
