The Doge Table was originally developed by Carlo Scarpa in 1968 for Dino Gavina, a leading Italian design retailer. Gavina pushed Scarpa to adapt the table from its original wood and marble palette to metal and glass, highlighting beauty of its base. The design marks a pivotal moment for Scarpa--the table highlights rather than hides the screws that hold it in place, and its form is tailored to the constraints of mass production. As such it marks Scarpa's arrival as a proper industrial designer. This design was awarded the Compasso D'Oro in 1979.
The table is made of thick steel and glass and is very, very heavy. This table was in all likelihood manufactured in the 1980s and has wear to its legs. It is missing a pair of brass bumpers. And the original single slab of glass has been replaced with two half slabs, making it much easier to transport.
