This is a spectrograph (an image of the different colors of light in a spectrum) of sunlight. It is from a special 1934 printing by the National Geographic Society. Its cover sheet reads:

"The solar spectrum. Sir Isaac Newton suggested seven colors––violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red––but its hues are really innumerable and merge insensibly into one another."
